Physics Student Initiated Assignment 2008:
A Study on Hydroelectricity.

The ‘green’ issue we have chosen is renewable energy and its sources.

Introduction

Our research scope includes:
  1. Processes involved in energy conversion
    1. Law of conservation of energy
  2. Environmental impacts of hydroelectricity
  3. Effectiveness of the hydroelectricity
    1. whether the maximum potential of each source is realized
    2. overall benefits to the environment
  4. Case studies of nations using such a system of hydroelectricity
    1. To evaluate the feasibility and practicality of the energy source
The largest physics principle involved in this study is the law of conservation of energy.

The law of conservation of energy states that the total amount of energy in any isolated system remains constant but cannott be recreated, although it may change forms.

In the case of hydroelectricity, many forms of energy – especially kinetic energy – is converted into electrical energy, proving this law and forming an efficient renewable energy source.

Rationale

We felt that amongst all the environmental issues that are prevalent in society currently, the idea of different sources of energy is a concept being tried and tested – as the world becomes ‘greener’, we are looking for energy sources that will not run out or harm the environment. Water, covering the most of our planet, is definitely a comparatively easier and more efficient energy source.

Hydroelectricity is also greatly relevant to this topic, having briefly touched on the idea of energy conversion in our past lessons. As we have prior knowledge on the concept of energy conversion, and have skimmed the surface of the physics in these sources, it would be interesting to do further in-depth research the way some sources work, and more importantly, the processes involved.

Something that we have always wanted to know included how an energy source – in this case, hydroelectricity – managed to maximize the limited resources of our world to the best of its ability, and thus we decided to take this opportunity to combine both physics and environmental awareness into this project.
